The Overburden Drilling System typically uses a casing or liner that is advanced into the ground simultaneously with drilling to prevent cave-ins, and to facilitate extraction of samples or installation of various geotechnical instruments. The drilling rig used in the system is usually equipped with special bits that can effectively penetrate the overburden layer and the rock formation underneath.

When the guide bit reaches to the rock stratum, the stabilizer rod and guide bit begin to fold, the reamer bits expand along the sliding chute and start to drill; when finished, the stabilizer rod is lifted, the guide bit is automatically separated by gravity and the reamer bits are automatically gathered, thus lifted from the bottom of the hole. This drilling system is mainly applied for 108-323mm.
